Moths of Unusual Size
They do exist!
We spotted this huge moth on the side of the cabin the other day. It is the size of my cell phone (about 4 inches wide!) The problem is that we have no idea what kind it is. Any ideas?
I believe you have a sphynx moth. There are 1200 or so species. http://johnfowler.photoshelter.com/gallery-show/G0000nmOf9kZrS1U/P0000Mde6kJ74ErQ Close to Big Poplar Sphynx.
That's what we were thinking too. However, we looked through a bunch of pictures of sphynx moths but couldn't find a match in the coloration. Thanks for the link! I'll look into it...
We saw those at our place on Seagull last year... I'll ask Jay if he remembers what they are. They were out at the same time as some amazing lavender/yellow and pink/yellow moths that looked like they were meant to match irises.
